London Travelcards & Oyster Cards

If you are coming to London, with so much to see and do, you will need an Oyster card or a Travelcard to get around the capital. These will help you to move easily, quickly and economically around London's Public Transport network. The school is located in the centre of London, Zone 1. Click here for a Zone Map of London

An Oyster Card

An Oyster card is a smartcard which holds (1) "pay as you go" credit or (2) an electronic Travelcard (weekly or monthly) or (3) an electronic Bus Pass. A refundable deposit of £5 is charged.

A Visitor Oyster Card

A Visitor Oyster card is a smartcard that just comes pre-loaded with money for "pay as you go" travel. The card costs £3 (non-refundable) and you can choose how much credit to add to your card: £10, £15, £20, £30, £40, £50.

  • A Visitor Oyster card can be purchased before arrival in England.
  • You cannot buy a Visitor Oyster card when you arrive in London.
  • You cannot load a Travelcard onto a Visitor Oyster card. If you need to travel every day an Oyster card (with a Travelcard loaded) will probably be cheaper.

Student Oyster Photocard

A student who studies a minimum of 14 weeks at the Victoria School of English can apply for an Oyster student card. With a valid Student Oyster photocard, you can buy Travelcards and Bus Passes at 30% off the normal adult rate. We will provide you with a Student Oyster card application form.

Travelcards

A Travelcard is valid for use within Zones 1-6 on:

  • London Underground
  • Map of the London Underground
  • London Buses
  • National Rail Trains
  • The Docklands Light Railway
  • Tramlink
  • Travelcard holders also receive a 33% discount on London River Services.

Travelcards are valid on tubes and buses. Bus Passes and Travelcards are valid on all buses in Greater London regardless of Zone. The price of a Travelcard depends on the Zones you purchase.

A Daily Travelcard

These are paper tickets allowing unlimited travel for one day. An Oyster card with "pay as you go" is usually cheaper than a Daily Travelcard as there is a "pay as you go" maximum daily charge. This upper amount is known as a "cap".

A Weekly & Monthly Travelcard

A weekly or monthly Travelcard is not sold as a paper ticket, it has to be loaded onto an Oyster card. It allows unlimited travel for the period purchased. The7 Day Travelcard is valid for 7 consecutive days.

Cash free buses

Passengers boarding a bus in central London are now required to have paid for their journey prior to travelling. Cash is not accepted. You can pay your fare with:

  • an Oyster Card loaded with a weekly or monthly Bus Pass
  • an Oyster Card loaded with a weekly or monthly Travelcard
  • an Oyster Card using "pay as you go" credit
  • a Visitor Oyster Card using "pay as you go" credit
  • a Daily Travelcard
